Joshua 22:30-34(NKJV) 30Now when Phinehas the priest and the rulers of the congregation, the heads of the £divisions of Israel who were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben, the children of Gad, and the children of Manasseh spoke, it pleased them.  31Then Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said to the children of Reuben, the children of Gad, and the children of Manasseh, “This day we perceive that the Lord is among us, because you have not committed this treachery against the Lord. Now you have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the Lord.” 32And Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, and the rulers, returned from the children of Reuben and the children of Gad, from the land of Gilead to the land of Canaan, to the children of Israel, and brought back word to them.  33So the thing pleased the children of Israel, and the children of Israel blessed God; they spoke no more of going against them in battle, to destroy the land where the children of Reuben and Gad dwelt. 34The children of Reuben and the children of Gad called the altar, Witness, “For it is a witness between us that the Lord is God.”

This week we have been looking at the 2 ½ tribes of Israel that chose to settle on the east bank of the Jordan river. We have been looking at this in light of the thought that God wants this to be a year of favor for his people. We have seen that favor given by God can bring great benefit to the people of God. We also know that favor with those to whom we are called to preach will result in more people being saved. The thing we want to see this week is that the place of the greatest favor is the center of the will of God.

The 2 ½ tribes who settled east of Jordan did so because this land was more pleasing to their flesh than the land on the west side of the river. They went across the river with their army and helped the rest of Israel obtain their possession in Canaan, the understood Promised Land, but they did not want to live there. I believe that many Christians today want to see the will of God come to pass in the earth but they do not want to live in the center of God’s will. They do not want to sacrifice comfort or pleasure to see the will of God accomplished. I believe this is a dangerous place to live.

In today’s scripture we see that Reuben, Gad and Manasseh explained the construction of the replica altar to the rest of Israel by saying they just wanted it to be an altar of remembrance. They were afraid that the rest of Israel would forget that they were part of the covenant people. There is no rebuke in this chapter. Their explanation is accepted and they are allowed to keep this altar. However, I believe that what happens to them is a warning to those of us who would rather live on the fringes of the will of God than make the full commitment to be in the center of God’s will.

What role did the 2 ½ tribes play in the subsequent history of Israel? I have tried to find them in the scriptural account and I cannot. They are mentioned in Judges and there are some individuals with those names mentioned in the Old Testament, but I see no mighty deeds by Reuben, Gad or Manasseh. I have found no mighty warriors or prophets from these tribes. There is no mention of great events happening in their territory. It is possible that I may have missed something, but I think it is safe to say that they were not major players in what happens in Israel.

Reuben, Gad and Manasseh simply fade out of the record. They became a non-factor in the destiny of Israel. I do not want that to be what my legacy becomes. I want the devil to know I was here and breathe a sigh of relief when I leave. When I stand before the Lord, I want to hear “Well done.” not, “What did you do again?” When we choose to live on the fringes of the will of God, we become a non-factor in the Kingdom. We may live comfortable lives or we may not, but we will not fulfill the destiny God has for us in the earth.

What was the problem with their choice to stay on the east side of Jordan? They pointed it out themselves in the 25th verse. They say God made the Jordan a border between them and the rest of Israel. In actuality, they are the ones who made the border, not God. The result was the same. There was a division between them, the rest of the people of God and the perfect will of God. This border created some weaknesses that the enemy eventually exploited.

Reuben, Gad and Manasseh gradually lost their identity with the rest of Israel. They were still covenant people, but the separation caused them to develop a somewhat different lifestyle than those in Canaan. I cannot give chapter and verse to support this conclusion, but I can point to human nature. It is always the case that when part of a group are separated from the whole, they will develop differently than the whole. I believe this must have been the case with Reuben, Gad and Manasseh or they would not have faded from the record.

As a pastor, I have seen this pattern over and over again. People who are involved in church and committed to the whole purpose of God are different in their Christian walk than those who simply come on Sunday and try to “live a good life.” Often they just do not see the necessity to walk in the holiness and commitment that the rest of church does. The result is usually compromise and further separation. That is the legacy of Reuben, Gad and Manasseh.

The 2 ½ tribes were cut off from the presence of God. In the Old Testament, the presence of God dwelt in the Holy of Holies. The Holy of Holies was first in the Tabernacle and eventually in the Temple in Jerusalem. It was not on the east side of Jordan. The altar that Reuben, Gad and Manasseh built on the east side of Jordan was called a “replica” of the altar of the Lord, but it did not have the presence of God.

We might point out that the presence of God no longer dwells in an earthly temple but in the hearts of men. This is very true. However, the manifestation of God’s presence is strongest in the center of his will. When we choose to live on the fringes of Christianity, we will never experience the manifestation of God’s presence in its fullness. When we are separated from this manifestation, we gradually lose the sense of his presence and the affect that it has in our lives. I believe this is a major problem. Without the manifested presence of God Christianity devolves into nothing more than a religious system. (1 Tim 3:5)

Finally, Israel’s choice left them with no separation between them and the enemy. It was just too easy for the enemy to infiltrate them. There was too much contact with the cultures that were opposed to the destiny of the people of God. Eventually this led to so much compromise that they were no longer a viable factor in fulfilling that destiny.

I believe this is what happens to us when we are not fully committed to the will of God. We find ourselves with no border between the enemy and us. We are too close to the culture of the world and we allow compromise to rob of us of what the Lord has for us. Sin is all around us and it is getting more and more accepted in our culture. We are foolish to think we can straddle the line between the kingdom of God and the world. We need to have a definite border between the world and us. I believe the best way to keep that border in tact is to be sold out for God and for his will and destiny.

Do not be like Reuben, Gad and Manasseh. Do not settle for life on the other side of Jordan. Do not settle for living as close to the world as possible without sin. It is a dangerous place to be. As the saying goes, “If you play around a slippery river bank you will eventually fall in.”

Instead, give all you have for the Lord. Sell out to the fullness of his will and presence. Do not ask how far you can go before you are out of the will of God. Ask instead how to find the center of the will of God. Commit to pleasing him not to just trying not to displease him. The benefits, including favor, are worth the commitment.

      Don,

These 2 and 1/2 tribes do show up in the record for a while. We find in Judges that some did not drive out the people of the land as God commanded. There is an interestng verse in 2 Kings 10.

      2 Kings 10:32-33 (NKJV)
32 In those days the LORD began to cut off parts of Israel; and Hazael conquered them in all the territory of Israel 33 from the Jordan eastward: all the land of Gilead–Gad, Reuben, and Manasseh–from Aroer, which is by the River Arnon, including Gilead and Bashan.

It would seem that when God chose to cut off parts of Israel these tribes were among the first to go. As I said, they become Irrelevant and that is not what I want to be.

I will check out the info you gave me. Thanks for the comments.

1 Chronicles 5:25-26New King James Version (NKJV)

25 And they were unfaithful to the God of their fathers, and played the harlot after the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God had destroyed before them. 26 So the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul king of Assyria, that is, Tiglath-Pileser[a] king of Assyria. He carried the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh into captivity. He took them to Halah, Habor, Hara, and the river of Gozan to this day.

    Hi Pastor Bill
I am doing a masters degree with Nations University and was curious as to what secular history might record so searched “What happened to Transjordan Israelites” from which I found nothing to quench my curiosity. I then searched the exact words of your article which has sadly answered my question. I was hoping for some significant historical recorded event and not a fading into oblivion.
Looks as if you wrote your article early in 2013 and in 2016 it seems to still be the only piece that answers this question. Thank you for giving a moral hermineutic lesson to this.

Other theologians, by supposition seem to suggest that these people were eventually diluted by non-Jews through marriage. We see in Luke 8:26 -39, in the town of Gerasenes (Gadarin), where Jesus cast out demons from a man dwelling amongst tombs and put them in 2000 pigs (swine). The people of that town requested that Jesus lives the town (Region of ten cities). In the chapter, these people lived “on the other side of the lake”, a supposition that these could be part of the Reubenites and Gad’s descendants. This refusal of Jesus’ presence is a continuation of their refusal of God’s promise to them.

My Bible Study ministry. Now in Joshua 13. Yes, we don’t know much of the history of Reuben, Gad & Half-Manasseh after the book of Judges. It seems that they settled down among Moab & Ammon, because Moab & Ammon feature very prominently in the history of Israel till the captivity. God actually provided three cities of refuge for them: Bezer, Ramoth-Gilead and Golan. But their initial choice was wrong. They went into captivity early, 1 Chron 5.26. In the time of our Lord Jesus we find the Gadarenes (connected with Gad) tending swine. Clearly, if we love the world, seek material comforts, reject a life of separation, and are not whole-heartedly in the will of God, we are going to suffer the consequences. Psalm 106.15.

We are warned about Lot (he chose for himself, Gen 13.11). Further, we have the example of Jacob; instead of going straight to Bethel, he settled down at Succoth & Shechem, and brought tragedy to his daughter Dinah (Gen 33-34).

The land allotted to Israel was clearly defined in Numbers 34. Reuben, Gad & the half-tribe of Manasseh chose what was NOT in the will of God. They lived on the wrong side of the Jordan. Jordan means death to self. But these two & half tribes sought self-advancement (or material prosperity; they had much cattle), material comforts, a life of ease (eg. Judg 5.16) – all clearly not in the will of God. Remember Jehoshaphat; he started out well, ended badly. Reason: He had ‘much business’, 2 Chron 17.13; also 20.35-37). We are crucified to the world, Gal 6.14. Alas, neither Reuben, nor Gad, nor the half-tribe of Manasseh, nor Jehoshaphat were crucified to the world.

If the 2 and 1/2 tribes moved to the east side of the Jordan simply due to prioritizing their needs/pleasures over the Lord’s will, why did Joshua give them his blessing? I don’t think these tribes were cut off from God’s presence, especially since Joshua 22:30-31 directly disputes this.

    1. Pastor Bill Kiefer Avatar

      Ling,
They were not cut off immediately. They did not “sin” by their decision. They were still in the general will of God. However, Joshua did warn them in verse 5.

I believe this highlights a problem in the church today. There is a desire to be in God’s will but not a priority to be in center of his. will.

Rueben , Gad and Manasseh were willing to fight for the center of the promised land but they did not want to live there. To me this indicates they did not place the fullness of God’s will over their physical good.

You may disagree with me about the 2 and 1/2 tribes. That is perfectly OK. I think the idea that we should hunger for the center of his will is necessary if we are going to live in the fullness or our Christianity and fulfill our destiny in God.

I am doing an in depth study of Joshua and was blessed by the perspective you gave of the 2 1/2 tribes. God spoke to me about blessing being given to us and our part in fighting for what has been promised. Your perspective brings it one step further in our desire being for God’s will and not on the actual blessing. They settled for A blessing but it wasnt Gods blessing as much as it was a desire masqueraded as a blessing. How often we look for the blessing and miss out because we feel the fight or struggle is not what God would’ve intended. But the fight is often right in the middle of God’s will. Thank you for your thoughts and sharing it! God bless you

The Ruebenites, Gadites and 1/2 tribe of Manessah are mentioned in 1Chronicles 12:8, 12:37. They are a part of David’s mighty men!

    1. Pastor Bill Kiefer Avatar

      Krissy,

Anyone who strays can find their way back. However, Davids mighty men did not start out as mighty. They started out as indebted and disappointed. In any case I am talking about what happened to them as a whole particularly in the immediate aftermath of the invasion of the promised land.

I stand by my conclusion that a Christian who does not seek the center of God’s will is vulnerable to the enemy and will usually find themselves separated from the body of Christ and in trouble.

Often this trouble looks like natural success, but it will manifest as failure in other ways.

Mark 8:36 (NKJV) 36 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?

I choose to seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness. I see far too many who want to know how far they can go before they sin. If I concern myself with seeking God’s kingdom, sin is much less of a problem.

Thank you for the inciteful study, but I do have one question. Was Elijah the Tishbite not from this area?

    1. Pastor Bill Kiefer Avatar

      Joe,

From what I have found, it is probably true that he came from that area. However, Elijah was by nature a different sort of person. To me, it is reasonable to assume that, although he may have come from the east side of Jordan, his life did not reflect what most of those from that area may have befallen.

Just because a person may not be from the “right” family or the “right” place does not mean God will not use them. God looks at the heart. No matter where Elijah came from originally it was his heart that made him one of the mightiest prophet to ever live.

I think this is even more pertinent to us. No matter our background we can be used of God. The determine factor is our relationship with the Lord and our obedience.

      God Bless and thanks,

Your thoughts were very helpful. My interest in these tribes came from a devotional on Numbers 32;23, “…be sure your sin will find you out.” The sin in question related to whether or not the eastern tribes would help in the conquest of Canaan. I agree that their half-heartedness in trusting God to provide for their cattle DID come back to bite them as regards their ‘destiny.’ A man and his cows…..lol. God bless, glad I found you…Stuart
